To mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, the National Library of Australia has curated a poignant exhibition that delves into the human side of the global conflict. Located in the Treasures Gallery, the display draws from millions of archival items to tell stories of both the home front and the front lines. Visitors can explore everything from the propaganda of recruitment posters, the resistance of conscientious objectors to the clandestine world of espionage and the pivotal role of women in the war effort. The exhibition also addresses the difficult reality of the Holocaust and the subsequent, monumental task of rebuilding lives and nations after 1945. It is a reflective space, made even more accessible with dedicated quiet hours each morning for those who prefer to contemplate these significant historical records in silence.
