As Canberra says goodbye to Cube, what was a cornerstone of the city’s LGBTQI+ nightlife, a new chapter begins with ChiChiz. Opening Friday 19 December at 32 Northbourne Avenue, this upscale dive bar is inspired by the legendary ChiChiz of Christopher Street, New York City, once celebrated as the only Black gay bar in NYC.

The Canberra iteration was born from a shared dream: to create an inclusive space that celebrates queer culture, creativity, and connection. And they’re delivering in style. From drag shows and karaoke to queer art nights, themed parties, and collaborations with local LGBTQIA+ organisations, ChiChiz promises a vibrant calendar of events that put community and self-expression front and centre.

Split across two floors with the upstairs bar available for private hire, ChiChiz keeps things unpretentious and fun. There’s no food menu here, just drinks that are “as bold and playful as the crowd we serve.” Think cheeky cocktails (including glitter-garnished martinis), premium pours, and zero-proof options for those skipping the hangover.

Opening night will set the tone with live performances, exclusive cocktails, and an atmosphere that reflects the spirit of the LGBTQI+ community. Expect glitter, good vibes, and a space where everyone can feel at home.
