There is no doubt that the issue of gender equality in hospitality has improved leaps and bounds, with a higher prevalence of females demonstrating their boss-action behind the bar, beside the cooktops or the like. But for a woman with a burning passion for making a career in the industry, it still remains a daunting playing field.

Tusk, a new Canberra-based women’s collective founded by Charlotte Stevens, is passionate about empowering women in hospitality, and has a goal to break down long-established societal norms of the industry being a ‘boys club’.

Tusk is proud to announce its launch event – a one-night bar takeover by women, for everyone.

This ticketed event consists of a four-course meal, specially designed cocktail list, art exhibition of local female artists; and the gender diverse music collective, Good Content, to DJ long into the night after dinner service is finished – with all proceeds raised going to White Ribbon, Australia.

It’s the aim of Tusk to bring to light some of the strong women characters of the hospitality scene in Canberra, so its only fitting for AKIBA’s chef, Laura Dale, to step into the Bar Rochford kitchen.

Laura explains that the menu on the night is inspired by ‘food from mum’s house’ – think comfort, nostalgia, and bellies full to the brim. Food that’ll make you want to call your mum and say hi!

“Going out for dinner is always celebrating something. When you go home you’re celebrating home and food. Food is for celebration,” she says.

“It’s food from the heart and home. It’s humble, unpretentious and reminiscent of nostalgic comfort that brings everyone together,” Charlotte adds.

The menu rationale is not futile – it is meant to invoke the idea that a meal at the family table is one of equality. One where you’re eating with brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles – not ‘men’ and ‘women’.

So gather a group of friends to celebrate some of the best lady bosses Canberra has to offer.
