The Street Theatre complex opened in May 1994, replacing two former
buildings (both destroyed by fire) that had been adapted as theatre
venues.
The Street Theatre was built by the ACT Government to serve the
theatre needs of audiences and practitioners, with an emphasis on
locally-produced professional theatre.
The Street is operated by The
Stagemaster Inc. (trading as The Street Theatre), a not-for-profit
community organisation formed specifically to tender for management of
the new complex, under an Occupancy Agreement with the ACT Government.
The Street Theatre is located on the edge of Canberra City and directly
adjacent to the Australian National University. They have a 250-seat
Theatre, an 80-seat Studio, a Gallery, a Box Office, and a Café/Bar that is
operated under a License Agreement on the premises.
The Theatre is next
to a large public car park (free of charge evenings and weekends), and
all venues are designed to offer wheelchair access.
The Street operate as both a production house, and as a venue for hire.
Permanent staff include the Artistic Director, General Manager,
Operations Coordinator, Venues Coordinator and Box Office Coordinator.
Performers and production personnel are engaged under short-term
contract, and there are a number of casual staff (mainly Front of House
and some technical staff).
They have a Volunteers 'work experience'
Program with local colleges for the provision of ushers for most
performances.
The Street Theatre is an ACT Government facility.
