Canberrans have opened their hearts, their homes and their wallets – and cleared the RSPCA ACT shelter on the first day of a discount promotion.

The Clear the Shelter offer of $29 adoptions kicked off with a line outside the shelter before opening time.

All cats, kittens and puppies have since been adopted from the RSPCA ACT Weston Shelter.

Animals still available include roosters, rabbits, dogs, mice and birds.

RSPCA ACT CEO Tammy Ven Dange said this is the first time RSPCA Shelters across the country have coordinated an adoption promotion and they were expecting some adoption records nationwide.

“What we didn’t anticipate locally was how ready owners were willing to get in early and pay full price to ensure that they were able to adopt animals this week ahead of the special,” Tammy said. “As such, we literally ran out of all available kittens and nearly all adult cats within the first two hours of opening on Friday!”

The adoption reduction at the RSPCA ACT shelter ends Saturday 24 February. You can find all animals available for adoption at www.adoptapet.com.au. It is experiencing some delays due to the amount of traffic.

“For those who missed out, they can check out adoptapet to see what other RSPCA shelters might still have available this weekend. Despite the fact that we might close to empty with after this weekend’s price promotion, there will always be more animals in the weeks ahead needing a second chance at a forever home unfortunately,” Tammy said.
