Abstraction–Création: J.W. Power in Europe 1921–1938 @ National Library of Australia

Abstraction-Création features the work of J.W. Power, one of Australia's most successful and accomplished expatriate painters of the interwar years. Power studied art in Paris with Ferdinand Léger at his Académie Moderne and was part of the international group of artists known as Abstraction-Création. This exhibition brings together, for the first time, Power's paintings from the University of Sydney and his sketchbooks held by the National Library of Australia. 10:00am - 5:00pm. Free.

Exhibition: Behind The Lines @ Old Parliament House

There’s never been a year like this in politics. Behind the Lines 2013 the year’s best political cartoons tells the tale of three leaders, Gillard, Rudd and Abbott through broken parliamentary alliances, caucus instability, and leadership spills, prime ministerial changes, corruption scandals, cabinet reshuffles, policies and opinion polls. Free caricatures - Whilst you’re seeing Behind the Lines 2013 (only in January) there will be a free caricaturist on site. You get to take home the drawing too! The Treasures Gallery holds many of the Library's most prized items from iconic objects to handwritten histories. Terra Australis to Australia is a narrative of our nation and its development, featuring highlights from the Library's collection, from early maps and atlases to books, manuscripts, paintings, drawings, photographs and objects. Come face-to-face with James Cook's Endeavour journal, a display showcasing the Library's collection of celestial mapping, the notebook William Bligh kept after the Bounty mutiny, and a selection of zines from the Library's growing collection. 10 am–5 pm.
