Gus's Cafe
Located along Bunda Street, opposite Canberra Centre’s North Quarter, Gus’s Cafe is undoubtable a Canberra institution.
With al fresco dining always the focus, Gus’s Café still offers some of the best coffee in the Capital, scrumptious light meals and hearty favourites. The team also make fresh cakes, pastries and tarts.
Augustin 'Gus' Petersilka, a native of Vienna, founded Gus's Cafe in the 60's. He brought the concept of continental outdoor dining to what was then, a fledgling bureaucratic town. His idea was simple, yet radical, for its time - the promotion of a relaxed and welcoming dining environment, outside, in the heart of the city.
Stopping at nothing to achieve his hopes, Gus pioneered late night dining, open aired tables and even petitioned to the Queen when faced with bureaucratic threats from the local council. All this hard work resulted in the establishment of Canberra’s very first open-aired cafe in 1967.
Today, Gus's is a bustling hot-spot in Canberra's city, and although outdoor dining still dominates, Gus's boasts an intimate indoor area with sleek dark timber, down lights and chrome trimmings.
Gus's has long been famous for their All Day Breakfasts which include a long list of tasty classics, along with some sophisticated modern additions. The menu is packed with numerous dishes, whether its lunch, dinner or light snacks you're after.
