Bid’ah Cinta is the third in Nurman Hakim’s trilogy of films concerning Islam in contemporary Indonesia. The first of the trilogy, Pesantren: 3 Wishes 3 Loves (3 Doa 3 CInta), concerned three friends arrested after 9/11 on suspicion of terrorism, was shown on SBS Australia shortly after its 2008 release. The second, Khalifah, examined the controversies surrounding the niqab in 2011.
It was shown on SBS during the 2017 controversy surrounding the election of the governor of Jakarta. This love story was boycotted by Islamic puritans but embraced by liberal Islamic groups.
