New Year’s resolutions are done. Let’s pretend that all those promises of healthier eating never actually happened.

Now that the weather is cooler, there’s nothing like giant lashings of comfort food. Lucky for you, OutInCanberra has put on its most comfortable pants and set out across the city to find the very best dude food available.

Brodburger

Brod started out as a caravan by the lake, which always had a huge line of hungry people waiting to get their hands on incredible high-quality burgers. Since upgrading to a restaurant down near the Old Bus Depot Markets, the menu has gotten bigger and the lines have gotten longer. However, good things come to those who wait. If you want to skip the line, order online first.

Our pick:  Brod Deluxe – with double the meat and a couple of fried eggs.

Bentspoke Brewing Co.

Bentspoke is your go-to for great local wines and spirits and of course, award-winning house-brewed beer and cider. They have all the classic pub feeds to accompany their huge range of beers on tap, including Pork Tacos, Scotch Fillet, Chicken Wings and more. It’s the perfect place to go for a beer with the boys on a Friday night.

Our pick: The Philly Cheesesteak – sliced steak served with melted cheese on a bun. For extra carbs, add a pint of Pedal Ale.

The Kingston Hotel

The pub, referred to as the ‘Kingo’, is one of Canberra’s original watering holes and has become one of the most popular family-friendly pubs. Known for its cheap and hearty feeds (including $9.00 lunch specials) it’s a great place to go with mates to have a steak and a beer while watching a game.

Our pick: 400g Angus Scotch Fillet – not the biggest slab of meat on the menu, but one of the best. Add seasoning and slap it on the grill to cook to your preference.

Turkish Halal Pide House

This is the go-to place for a quick, filling, authentic Turkish kebab! The family owned and operated pide house has a reputation for being the best Turkish in Canberra for a reason. If you don’t know what pide is it’s the Turkish version of pizza, which is basically bread packed full of delicious meat, cheese and spices.

Our pick: The Halal Snack Pack (HSP) – a layer of chips with cheese, layered with your favourite and topped with ‘The Holy Trinity’ of chilli, garlic and barbeque sauces.

The Spit Shack

Seven days a week you’ll find the Spit Shack, located in Braddon’s Hamlet, serving up breakfast, lunch and dinner. The fun and laid back atmosphere and insanely delicious meat is what makes this place the best place to get your dude-food fix. If you want a casual feed or a quick lunch break, go try their fantastic roast lamb and pork from the spit, which is prepared each day and slow cooked on an open fire.

Our pick: The Two-foot-long King Roll – not for the faint-hearted… it’s almost as long as your arm!

The Meating Room (pictured)

A fantastic option on the Souhtside, the café, bar and grill is there for dudes all day long by serving from breakfast through to dinner. This is a family friendly space that provides a welcoming and casual gastropub dining experience with an extensive food menu that caters for all tastes.

Our pick: The Finger-Licking Beef Ribs – they seem to almost fall off the bone thanks o the slow-cooked technique.

Grease Monkey

Grease Monkey serves mouth-watering burgers and fried chicken out of an old mechanic’s garage. For some liquid fuel in your tank, check the boards for beers and cocktails. Grease Monkey will show you everything a burger should be: simple, greasy and filling.

Our pick: The Full Service burger – including Aussie burger-essentials such as pineapple, beetroot and egg.
