Your winners: Ellacure & Sub-Urban
by Natalie Tsirimokos 1 July 2009
Ellacure has won The OutInCanberra People’s Choice Best Restaurant 2009, and Sub-Urban has won OutInCanberra People’s Choice Best Bar/Nightclub 2009.
The OutInCanberra People's Choice Awards were presented on Wednesday 17th June as part of the OutInCanberra 2009 AHA Hospitality Awards.
Over 450 guests including ACT Chief Minister Jon Stanhope MLA and Andrew Barr MLA were lead by funny man MC Paul Martell, as 34 awards were presented to Canberra’s best hospitality venues and professionals.
As a local Belconnen man, born and bred, Ellacure Head Chef/Owner, Andrew Hollands, foresaw the lack of dining experiences in the area.
“I grew up in Giralang and Kaleen and the closest you can get to this style of venue is Dickson or go the city," Andrew said.
"There isn’t really any cool little nook and crannies to go to in Belconnen, like the Griffith shops.”
Ellacure has now been trading for more than 14 months and its remained height of interest for Belconnen residents, public servants and Canberrans seeking new dining experiences.
Last night, Ellacure also took home AHA Best Casual Dining - Modern Australian Cuisine 2009.
Sub-Urban was the big winner of the night, taking home two awards, in addition to its OutInCanberra People's Choice Best Bar/Nightclub award.
Since its launch in December 2008, Sub-Urban has dominated the Canberra pub scene, adding an element of style and substance to the genre.
Inspired by the good old fashioned Aussie pub, the Belluci’s Hospitality Group has drawn on elements such as timber flooring and vintage detailed cornices, but there is no hiding the fact that this is a unique modern endeavour.
“We wanted to create a place that provides a quality food and drink pub experience,” said part-owner Socrates Kochinos.
The ‘OutInCanberra People’s Choice Award’ category is recognised as the first local award of its kind, giving Canberrans an exciting opportunity to have their say and make a positive impact on their favourite local hospitality venues.
Andrew Barr, MLA took to the polls on Tuesday 21st April to make the first vote in the OutInCanberra People’s Choice Awards competition, and declare voting open. Right up until midnight last night the online polls were open to thousands of voters having their say.
OutInCanberra are also giving away FREE DINNER for 1 YEAR to a lucky Canberran who voted for his/her favourite venues. The winner can enjoy dinner to the value of $100 every month at OutInCanberra restaurants of their choice. WINNER: Yvette Kerr
