This year’s Zombie Walk, a charity event to raise money for the Brain Foundation, is being held on Saturday 1 November from 3:30pm.

Zombie walks have been spreading across the globe for several years, raising awareness and support for various charities, and now the infection has spread to Canberra. ‘Zombie is in’ these days, made all the more famous by shows like ‘Walking Dead’ and Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’.

The zombie walk involves participants dressing as zombies and the undead, who then limp, shuffle and walk through the city streets and malls. It is purely for fun and for those who enjoy dressing up.

This year, for the first time, Canberra’s Haus Models and the Canberra Makeup Academy (CMA) are official sponsors of the Zombie Walk.

Ilana Davies, a model with HAUS, who has appeared in Italian Vogue online and was on the catwalk two years running for Fashfest will be completely transformed by a senior trainer and a fresh CMA graduate using the latest and most advanced techniques to create a thrilling Zombie look!

Director Deb Pobjie and Director Nina Schilling started CMA in 1998 and their aim is to ensure their graduates are among the ‘best of the best’ in Australia with creativity and technique. Their two senior trainers, Jacquie Scott or Dove Hamilton, have just come back from Sydney where they took an extensive course on the newest and most advanced techniques for creating ‘Zombie looks’.

Deb says the challenge is to create a gruesome look while making it realistic and natural at the same time: ‘Anyone can throw some fake blood on their face, but to get the skin tone right, the eyes right and the veins looking “real” is the complication with this type of makeup.’

One technique involves making proesthetics out of gelatin and applying them to the body in a seamless way so they don’t look ‘stuck on’. ‘It’s not about the gore, it’s about the technique,’ says Deb.

How cool does this sound?

If you want to catch a glimpse of the amazing makeup artistry work on these ‘Zombies’, all the action kicks off at 3:00pm at Regatta Point.
