Q&A: Janette Lenk
by Rahima Saikal 4 July 2012
We caught up with fashion designer and stylist Janette Lenk. She spills her tips on getting into the industry and what is hot this winter.
What is it like being a fashion designer/stylist in Canberra?
It's Fantastic! I live to be creative. I enjoy styling because I love being able to make a difference in someone's life, helping them on how to dress. I love being a fashion designer because I get such a rush when someone compliments me on my designs and then they want one of my designs too. It's the best feeling when someone appreciates your art and especially now in Canberra, people are recognising us locals stylists/designers.
What advice do you have for other aspiring fashion designers and stylists?
Take pictures of all your work and always update your portfolio - you never know what's around the corner. Remember you create your own opportunities - so go get them.
What is the hottest look for men and women this winter?
Right now - I heart layering with hats, leather gloves, textured scarfs and especially 3/4 length coloured coats. I'm excited to buy another coat!
What are some of the coolest things about being a stylist?
That I get to shop all day and check out the latest fashion as well as help people dress in the latest trends. It's so rewarding.
Where would go in Canberra on a girls night out?
I enjoy going out for a nice dinner usually in the city or Manuka and then for a drink at Honky Tonks or Public.
What other hobbies do you have?
I love learning and at the moment I am learning to play the guitar. The gym is a pretty big part of my life and I feel like I get a second wind after a hard workout and if I have deadlines, it gets me through. Oh and I love watching movies but who doesn't.
