Visiting the Kingston Foreshore is becoming more delightful and it’s not just the prospect of spring weather after a cold Canberra winter. It’s the new places to eat and drink opening up along the side of the lake.

In the last few months Walt & Burley has appeared on the furthermost corner of the Foreshore. It has a chilled vibe, mixing the old and the new in its décor, with stained glass windows adding a touch of colour to the industrial look of the copper and wooden mix. Just some of the items of the menu include Butternut Gnocchi with sourdough croutons (that are absolutely covered in cheese), the Pulled Pork Roll and, for dessert, Walt’s Burley Mess – a combination of meringue, vanilla bean ice cream lemon curd and pecan praline. A little further along, a very Italian restaurant, La Rustica, resides on the corner of Trevillian Quay, with an old world touch. Wooden panelling decorates the ceiling, while fittingly rustic decorations separate the dining areas from the bar. The menu offers plenty of Italian favourites, with salads, pizzas and pastas (as well as plenty of seafood!) to present an authentic taste of Italy. For more info, click here.

Patrons looking for Thai food are spoiled for choice, with the newest place Coconine squeezed in so close to Chung Cho that it’s hard to differentiate the exotic smells emanating from the two establishments. Coconine is small and it can also be cheap, offering a $10.00 lunch special Monday through Friday. It’s intimate and comfortable and will not be outdone by its neighbours in its culinary fare.

The Foreshore is also a good place for expanding gustatory experiences. Paleo Perfection Espresso Bar crams chocolates, coffee and snacks into a mere couple of metres squared. The chocolates are especially rich, (particularly the macadamia chocolate and the coffee bean) and they are a bargain at 3-for-$5.00. For more info, click here.

Continuing the healthy theme, walking into Local Press is like turning the corner into a shipyard market with hanging woks, baskets of fruit, rough-hewn wooden tables and chairs and a large ship on the middle trestle table. The cute little café boasts jars of juice (green concoctions of kale and cucumber), a range of whole foods from rustic menus and a kitchen open to the customers viewing. For more info, click here.

With the weather getting set to warm up and the skies opening out, the Kingston Foreshore is going to be a lovely place to spend springtime and summer for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, treats, coffee or juice, strolling along the water, trying new places and new tastes.
