It’s that time of year again: Spring Carnival season! It’s the perfect opportunity to step out of your comfort zone and dress up for The Race That Stops a Nation.

Over the years we have seen many-a-trend gracing Melbourne Cup Race Day at Thoroughbred Park – including classic neutrals, monochrome, lace and pastels – all tied in with accessories, high-heels, purses, fancy hats and fabulous fascinators.

This year it’s time to up the style stakes and wear something unique to make a long-lasting fashion statement. Did someone say, “Canberra Outlet Centre Fashions on the Field competition”?

We’re eyeing off statement floral wreaths in bold colours, face nets (for the third season in a row!), cute ears and minimalistic vine arrangements for super-trendy trackside alternatives to the usual hats and fascinators.

Shoes, as always, need to be kept sensible. There is nothing worse than getting a stiletto stuck in the grass. Opt for thick heels or a wedge for both comfort and to avoid any embarrassing mishap.

Outfits are extremely elegant this year. As usual, ballack-and-white or earthy tones are popular with 50s-style skirts (knee or just-below hemlines), high necks and full coverage of the bust. Opt for a style with a pattern or perhaps a peplum cut for a bit of statement. Now, find some gloves to complete your look!

Men’s fashion is getting more and more exciting, and we’re seeing the boundaries being pushed this year. Expect to see clashing of colours and prints and the latest trend of light pants with a dark blazer.

Good luck!

We think it’s certainly the season to back yourself on a daring outfit.
