While Brodburger remains a hit and the Mexican sombrero is a halo above the Canberra restaurant scene, there are new kids on the block for 2014. The key theme of this year seems to be reinvention, as Canberra is set for a new kind of chocolate hit and Frozen Yoghurt is revamped.

No one is safe from the newer and trendier food groups that have hit our shores – and the lovers of culinary delights are set to remain impressed.

1. San Churro Chocolateria
Oh my God. Just….Oh! There are truly no words for this morsel of Madrid invention. A Max Brenner with attitude or a Kooky Koko Black remains after a team of chocolate aficionados created a restaurant which stocks everything from cakes to shakes, chocolate bars to churros. Boasting highly decadent ingredients such as the richness of pure cocoa butter, this is one for the chocoholics to try.

2. Yoghurtland
If you are in the mood for some Friday night cuteness Yogurtland won’t leave you with a brain freeze. A seemingly fantastic business idea, Yogurtland operates under the statement “Your eyes are bigger than your belly.” An impressive number of yogurt flavours are available, from Red Velvet (favourite) to Tasmanian Devil’s Chocolate (second favourite). Mix these two together and you will see why he became extinct – amazing!

Pur any of these for yourself, then get to the toppings. With the handy little plastic tongs you can chose your own: fudge brownie, fruit and nuts are all here. However, be warned: decadent family-friendly fun indeed, but chose your toppings sparingly – the flavours of the yogurt are yummy enough as they are (and usually I leave with many Maltesers at the bottom of my bowl)

3. Ben & Jerry’s Ice-cream
There is nothing better or more pure in this world than the humble Ben and Jerry’s choc-chip cookie dough ice-cream. After the success of the B&J Open Air Cinemas in Canberra over the summer, Ben & Jerry’s finally opened up their own stand at Hoyts Woden. They have waffles, cones and a variety of flavours (Including the exceedingly popular Cherry Garcia – which seems to be in every single American Breakup Movie.)

4. The gourmet cocktail
Okay okay, fine…not technically a food but man does it hit the spot after a 9 – 5 working week. We’ve said, “It’s not you – it’s me” to the common Cosmo and made way for the Gourmet cocktail. Saying goodbye to the Cosmo – it’s gone and made way for the Canberra night scene to be transported back into an era of suave sophistication with the Jasmine Spiced Pear Martini (An old-worldly twist on the Appletini). Fruits, chilli and flowery sucker punches are all being shaken and stirred into old classics for a newer and more eccentric feel.
