Over the past few years, burgers have basically become their own food group. Although they’ve always been thought of as ‘American’, it turns out that Canberra has some burgers that are sure to give even Shake Shack a run for its money. Armed with a list of recommendations from friends, family, and the BurgersOfCanberra Instagram page, I’ve made my way around the city this past month, in search of the best burgers in Canberra. I’ll admit, I probably had a bit too much fun – all in the name of journalistic ‘research’ I suppose! I’m definitely committed to the cause; that is, finding burgers you need to try immediately.

These were my favourites:

Brodburger
You really can’t talk about burgers without mentioning good old Brod. I love the BrodChicken (chicken + bacon = culinary match made in heaven), and also the BrodVeg.

Poppa’s Pasta and Burger Takeaway
Probably one of the best kept secrets in Canberra is Poppa’s Pasta and Burger Takeaway, located in the Kingston Hotel. They’ve definitely made ‘drive-through’ food gourmet!

Parlour Wine Room
The Parlour Burger from Parlour Wine Room in NewActon is proof that even burgers can be fancy. For now, it’s only on offer on the lunchtime menu – look no further for a filling weekday lunch, with a bit of class.

The London
With three locations around Canberra – Civic, Tuggeranong and Belconnen – The London has secured its place in the hearts of burger lovers. A large range of gourmet beef, chicken and vegetarian options means there’s something for everyone.

The Cupping Room
The classic Chicken Burger will always be a good idea, but if you’d like to try something different the Huevos Bollo is an egg-cellent option.

Fox and Bow Café
If you’re a fan of spice, try the RoadRunner, which has grilled chicken, Swiss cheese, guacamole, slaw, and jalapenos, served on a toasted bun with a side of, quite possibly, the world’s most delicious chips.

Grease Monkey
A new addition to the Braddon scene, Grease Monkey is gaining a loyal following with its cheeky décor, central location and, of course, yummy burgers. Go all out with The Full Service, essentially a burger-with-the-lot. That means beef pattie, bacon, egg, cheese, tomato, beetroot, onion, and tomato sauce.

Tip: Arrive hungry! If you’d like something a little less, well, full-on, the signature Greasy Burger is also a winner.

We hope you enjoy trying all these delicious burgers as much as we did!
