From September 18 – 28 the Canberra Theatre will be transformed into a frozen world of fairytale ice magic for the Imperial Ice Stars’Cinderella on Ice.

14 tonnes of ice, five kilometres of pipe work and 2,500 litres of anti-freeze will create an exquisite ice rink on the theatre stage for 13 shows of spellbinding spectacle and dazzling entertainment.

The Imperial Ice Stars are the world’s leading theatrical ice skating company, comprising Olympic, World, European and National championship skaters.

With over 250 competition medals between them, the Imperial Ice Stars specialise in performing theatrical ice skating in the intimacy of the theatre. Normally ice shows are performed in large arenas, making it difficult to see some of the skating manoeuvres but in this show you will see stunning skating at very close range.

Cinderella on Ice has been created by award-winning Tony Mercer, widely regarded as the world’s leading ice director and choreographer, who has over 14 years’ experience in creating ice shows, and James Cundall, one of the top producers of live entertainment across five continents with over 80 productions to his name.

In this retelling of the traditional story, Cinderella, a humble chorus dancer is thrust into the spotlight as a prima ballerina whose dancing captivates the handsome Mayor’s son. Despite rival attempts by her stepsisters to steal his heart, the kindly Watchmaker and Gypsy Fortune Teller ensure that true love triumphs.

The lavish backdrops and scenery form one of the most expensive sets ever created for a theatrical ice show, and have been designed by one of Australasia’s leading scenic designers, Eamon D’Arcy, renowned for his spectacular staging of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony.

77 richly decorative costumes have been specifically created for Cinderella on Ice by Albina Gabueva, head designer at Moscow’s famed Stanislavsky Theatre. Every costume is an individual design – no two are the same – and all have been cut by the famous Bolshoi Ballet costuming department.

The Imperial Ice Stars are renowned for their daring and innovation on the ice. Cinderella on Ice continues to break new ground in the genre of ice dancing. Stunning skating feats, some only seen in Olympic arenas and some never seen before, are performed within the confines of a frozen theatre stage, including breathtaking high speed throws and incredible lifts and lift sequences.

The Imperial Ice Stars’ style of story-telling is a unique fusion of ice dancing, ballet, gymnastics and acrobatics, so there’s something for everyone. Cinderella on Ice has taken ice choreography to new limits.
