Akiba is almost here – with the doors opening next Monday 8 December. OutInCanberra has snuck in for a quick look, and we think you’re going to be impressed!

Firstly, it’s beautiful. There is a stunning bar, made with reclaimed timber from Thor’s Hammer and polished to a high gloss. Upon this sit the gorgeous copper beer taps, created a metal and wood motif that is repeated throughout the venue. You’ll have to look carefully to see just how often it pops up.

Meanwhile, the mood is electric. Not just the way that the chatter of excited staff bounces off the windows and polished concrete floor, rather through the name itself: Akiba refers to the electronics precinct of Tokyo,

To bring this through into the venue, bright neon bolts of lightning appear from around corners, while nighttime scenes from Japan’s capital glow from square light-boxes mounted on the walls.

As for food, this is a fast furious experience with massive Asian flavours hitting you from all different directions. Get ready for carts laden with delicious treats to whizz between the tall tables as staff dole out their contents to what will undoubtedly be a busy dining space.

There’ll be cocktails as well as a range of craft Australian beers. We loved the idea that many of the drinks on the list are pre-made – taking a kitchen’s approach to prepping the flavours through infusions and mixes. Once ready, they’re distilled and chilled so as to be ready for quick service over the popular bar.

Intrigued? So are we (still!). You can see for yourself from Monday, so stay tuned to their Facebook account for further information over the weekend.
