As much as it feels like it during the day, overnight temperatures are showing that winter is not quite done in Canberra. Don’t let this get you down, however, because it means that there are still a few weeks left to enjoy a warm drink (or four).

Here are five delicious (and a little unusual) hot chocolates you should definitely try during this cold snap.

Toffee-Nut
Chocolate and peanut butter has become a huge hit over the past decade. The limited addition Toffee-Nut (available at Max Brenner until 31 August) is blend of toffee, milk chocolate and peanut butter, basically a nut-lover’s dream.
The Toffee-Nut is served in a “hug mug” which, according to the menu, is a mug meant to “recreate that warm and fuzzy, endorphin-boosting moment of an actual hug”. What will make you even happier is the knowledge that 50c from each Toffee-Nut sold this month will be donated to the Children’s Hospital Foundations Australia. So, while you’re enjoying this decadent hot chocolate, you’ll also be passing on some much needed choco-love. It’s a win-win.

Hot & Cold
The Hot & Cold from San Churro is the ice-cream sundae, hot chocolate hybrid you never knew you needed (until now). The Hot & Cold is Spanish hot-chocolate with a creamy scoop of white chocolate ice-cream on top. The ice-cream perfectly cuts through the rich hot chocolate, making it a decadent (but not so rich it’s inedible) chocolate treat.

Mocha
I used to think that coffee had no place being in a hot chocolate, but that was before I tried a mocha from 210 Degrees, which is located in Hughes. I know this a big statement, but I think the mochas served there are the best you’ll find in Canberra. I’m clearly not the only person who enjoys the drinks from here because, regardless of whether it’s hot or cold outside, 210 Degrees is always packed.

Azteca
Feel like indulging your adventurous side? Transport yourself straight to Spain with one sip of an Azteca from San Churro. While you can certainly taste the chilli, it is not overpowering, meaning that the rich chocolate flavour is still very much the focus of the drink.

Sukao
There is nothing better than enjoying something you’ve made yourself. Clearly Max Brenner (AKA: ‘The Bald Man’) thought so too, as he created the Sukao so that your hot chocolate experience is like something straight out of Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory. A tea candle flame beneath the glass gently heats the milk, and you are able to add as many (or as few) of the chocolate buttons provided, to create a hot chocolate completely to your taste preferences.

As you can probably tell, I’ve been doing a lot of what I like to call ‘researching’ this week. I guess I’m fully committed to finding the perfect hot chocolate for every occasion!
