As we say goodbye to Canberra’s favourite flower extravaganza for another year and hello to yet another season of voting for the OutInCanberra People’s Choice Awards, it’s time to reminisce on last years’ winners and what it really means to be ‘the people’s choice’.

With the close of Floriade 2016 last week, we caught up with the team behind the annual flower extravaganza about winning the 2015 Event & Attraction category, and to chat about whether they have what it takes to be crowned again in 2016.

Congratulations on taking out the Event & Attraction category of the OutInCanberra People’s Choice Awards last year. As voting commences, do you think that Floriade 2016 has what it takes to win again?

We hope so! After 29 years, Floriade maintains its status as Canberra’s largest annual tourism event and it continues to generate a loyal following within the local community. The event offers a suite of opportunities for local involvement and engagement, which provides a strong platform for ongoing success in this voting category.

How many years have you been nominated in the People’s Choice Awards?

We have been nominated in this category every year since 2010 and we were successful in taking out the award under the Event & Attraction category in 2014 and 2015.

How has the OutInCanberra People’s Choice Awards helped Floriade progress as a national event?

The awards provide important community and industry recognition, which helps to reinforce the value of Floriade in the local event and tourism landscape. It also provides a boost to the dedicated team who work so hard to deliver and market the event each year.

What does it mean to be the ‘People’s Choice’?

It provides a sense of satisfaction that the event continues to strike a chord with locals and visitors alike. It also helps to enhance our drive to deliver a quality event experience each year.

If Canberra was a flower, what would it be?

An obvious answer would be the tulip, given the nature of Floriade’s stunning display of blooms, but Canberra’s floral emblem – the Royal Bluebell – is perfectly designed and loves the cool weather, while also remaining both vibrant and colourful.

As the event closes for another year, can you give us a sneak peak into Floriade 2017?

With 2017 being Floriade’s 30th anniversary, work is already well underway to celebrate this milestone year in suitable style. While we can’t give too much away, we’re excited by what the future holds for Australia’s premier spring festival.
